Following in the footsteps of San Francisco’s Temple Nightclub, and Rotterdam’s Watt; London is getting it’s own eco-nightclub this July. The club features a piezoelectric dance floor that will generate 60% of the buildings electricity. The remaining balance of electricity will be bought from renewable sources. Organic drinks are featured and if you can prove you walked, biked or took public transportation to the club, they’ll wave the entrance fee. All of this is orchestrated by an organization called Club4Climate, headed by Andrew Charalambous aka “Dr. Earth” (who could be Dr. Evil’s twin). Club4climate also has a goal to open a self sustained party island by 2010.

Seems to me that this would act like walking in sand would act on your walk or run.
In other words, the dancers would get very tired very quickly. Seems just a matter of time before they all go elsewhere.

Wow! I think this sounds so cool. What a brilliant idea. Geez, they should do this to the floors of schools and daycare centers. I’ve said many times if we could somehow harness the power of my two kids we’d have an endless supply of energy to our house!

I think anything can be made to generate power. A dance club can harness it’s power from the dance floor. If you’re a blogger, the keyboard can be turned into a generator harnessing power from your typing.

@Mark: Not exactly, in a piezoelectric circuit the floor will be basically on semi-rigid girders that have piezoelectric crystal cylinders spread throughout. The floor wouldn’t feel any different really, maybe a little more bouncy but that’s about it. They are starting to get funding to add this tech to busy roadways, hopefully we can do completely without big electric in some time.
