48 Hour Film People

By Guy Brighton on June 14, 2004

New York sees the 48 Hour Film Project come to town this weekend. Budding film makers get 2 days to make a film to compete with other entries from cities like London and Philadelphia. Winners will be given their prize by Oscar winner Michael Moore.

THE FOUNDER OF THE FEAST

Fresh from Cannes mayhem, we talk to Johnnie Oddball, the founder of the 48-hour Film Challenge, about the whys, the wherefores, and the do-you-mind-if-I-don’ts of high impact filmmaking.

Everybody knows Johnnie Oddball. Amidst the wee hour bustle at the Petit Majestic, Cannes indie alternative, mention his name and some random will shout ‘Johnnie Oddball? Hey dude, I’ve heard of you’. It’s not too much of a stretch to see why. Since its launch in August 2002, Johnnie’s 48-hour film challenge has involved close to 10,000 filmmakers in the UK and Europe. And he’s not finished yet. Oddball’s next challenge. America. The commercial heart of film. The magnet that draws the money and the talent from everywhere else. Can the Brits take on the Yanks? Beat them at their own game? Give him a minute and Johnnie’s Mach 1 patter will make you think it so.
