The guys at Agenda Inc must have been sitting with their feet up for the last 6 months listening to the radio: they’ve just released their Brandstand report for the first half of this year that analyzes the name-dropping of brands in Top 20 US songs; and therefore youth conciousness. They report that auto brands that were prevelant last year have taken a drop in number of mentions. 2004 sees fashion brands such as Jimmy Choo and Levis Strauss sung or rapped about.
The most popular brands? Cadillac and Hennessy. An interesting combination to put your feet up on the dashboard and listen to the radio with.

Armed with new engines (including a potent turbodiesel), handsome styling and high equipment levels, Ford’s smartly-priced Focus range takes a stab at the cut-throat subcompact market.
Squarely aimed at the market-leading Toyota Corolla/RunX, Honda Civic, Opel Astra, Volkswagen Jetta/Golf and Mazda 3, the new Focus line-up incorporates five four-door saloon and three five-door hatchback versions with three engine derivatives – 1,6- and 2,0-litre petrol engines and a 2,0-litre turbodiesel.
Whereas the first-generation Focus created quite a stir with its progressive styling, the new car, which shares its underpinnings with the Volvo S40, V50 and the Mazda 3, is still attractive, albeit more conservative and polished than its predecessor.
At the new model’s unveiling at the Auto Africa Expo held last October, the then-chief executive of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, Deborah Coleman, announced that cars assembled at the local Silverton plant would also be exported to Australia and New Zealand.
Locally, the 1,6-litre engine produces its maximum power of 77 kW at 6 000 r/min and peak torque of 145 N.m at 4 000 r/min. With this powerplant, cars are likely to reach a top speed of 183 km/h and complete the zero-to-100 km/h sprint in 11,5 seconds.
The 2,0-litre Duratec engine produces 107 kW of power at 6 000 r/min and 185 N.m at 4 500 r/min and is capable of a top speed ranging from 197 km/h (with the four-speed sequential sport shift) to 210 km/h.
The 2,0-litre Duratorq turbodiesel engine produces its peak power of 100 kW at 4 000 r/min, while maximum torque of 320 N.m is available at 2 0000 r/min. The peak torque of can be increased to 340 N.m using the “overboost” function that forms part of the TDCi’s engine management system. Top speed for the diesel-powered versions is a claimed 206 km/h with a combined average fuel consumption of 5,5- to 5,6-litres per 100 km.
All petrol models (other than the 2,0-litre Trend with the automatic transmission) are equipped with five-speed manual transmissions, while the turbodiesels are fitted with six-speed manual transmissions.
At the recent launch, CARtoday.com’s correspondent found the car’s dynamics to be excellent with the 100 kW turbodiesel arguably the pick of the bunch. It uses the same engine as was recently introduced in the Volvo S40, and he noted said the unit impressed with its quietness and lively performance.
Unfortunately, only pre-production versions of the 2,0-litre petrol and 2,0-litre diesel versions were available to drive at the Cape launch.
Thn its predecessor, which translates into a more spacious interior. Leg- and shoulder-room are now more generous and the luggage capacity has been expanded by about
