Motorola tie up enhances iPod’s lead

by Guy Brighton

Apple is creating a version of its iTunes jukebox for Motorola phones. Users will be able to transfer music from iTunes on their computers or from the iTunes online music store directly to Motorola phones.

The Motorola deal makes it harder for rivals such as Napster to make inroads on Apple in the nascent field, according to Merrill Lynch technology analyst Steve Milunovich. Milunovich also believes that Apple is emerging as the kingpin of digital music, likening its dominance to Microsoft’s in computer operating software.

The mobile version of iTunes software will be available on all of Motorola’s mass-market music phones in the first half of 2005.
