m2aGiven Imaging, a company in the US, has designed a camera capsule for human consumption. This high-tech device is being used for medical reasons and has demonstrated to be an effective tool in patients with suspected bowel diseases presenting with symptoms such as chronic diarrhoea, unexplained abdominal pain, weight loss, iron deficiency anaemia and obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.

Simply requiring a 10 hour fast prior to the procedure, M2A Capsule endoscopy begins when the patient ingests the capsule with a glass of water.

The camera displays a 140 degree field of view at 1:8 magnification and captures images by flashing light emitting diodes at the gastro-intestinal tract. Those images are then sent to a data recorder worn on the belt of the patient.

Apart from being simply amazing, what does all of this mean? In effect an 8 hour examination can now be carried out with a lot less pain and discomfort and while the patient gets on with their daily life.
