Tokyo Trends
Like their US counterparts, Japanese trendsetters are getting traditional, trendCentral reports, engaging in activities such as gardening and cooking, and are also looking to their cultural roots as a way of bringing simplicity to their lives. Tokyo trendsetters they claim are looking back to the music, fashion and recreational activities that their parents and grandparents enjoyed.
Traditional Instruments and Music
Many young people are taking up traditional stringed and percussion instruments, says trendCentral, and are incorporating them into pop and electronic music. Also popular with trendsetters are musicians who play traditional Japanese music such as Hideki Togi, who specializes in traditional Japanese court music and Rinsho Kadekaru, the now deceased Okinawan folk singer.
Onsen
Going to these traditional hot spring resorts, a pastime that is linked to older Japanese, is making a comeback with hip young people. trendCentral suggests young people enjoy the kitsch factor of wearing the blue and white cotton robes (provided by all onsens in Japan), eating chazuke (traditional rice gruel) and recreating a vacation that their parents would typically have had.
Traditional Japanese clothing for men
trendCentral has spotted young male trendsetters are wearing traditional Japanese clothes, typical among old men. They mix their cutting-edge dyed hair and expensive modern watches with geta (wooden clog sandals), yukata (cotton kimonos) and hakama (wide kimono pants).
