With Cargo, Lucky and all the talk about Curated Consumption you could be forgiven – for a brief moment – for thinking that the future of magazine publishing is all about shopping. But PSFK has spotted two trends worth noting:
Arty Mags![]()
Being up on your culture seems to be the new rage: Conde Nast has announced they’ll be launching a new art magazine with James Truman and the New Yorker showed the way when they broke the 1 million circulation mark last week. Writers could well be the new rock stars: Trendcentral reported recently that “it” magazine of the moment among trendy UK booklovers is Zembla, a new literary magazine that is attracting the design/fashion crowd. The magazine’s trendy layout and artistic covers have attracted trendsetter devotees – as well as advertisers such as Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, Christian Dior, Paul Smith, Issey Miyake, and Beck’s.
Cross-Niche
Modern Dog demonstrates the new trend towards publishing for two overlapping (or in this case: on-your-lapping – ho ho) audiences. Paris Hilton sits with her little Chihuahua on the cover for this new pets and celebrities mag. Whilst Sync and Dub reflect this trend with their celebrity cross over with gadgets and cars respectively Time Inc. have just announced the launch of Find! a cross between Reality TV and Antique Collecting. Find! will feature the Leigh and Leslie Keno from TV hit Antiques Roadshow as they explores people’s throw-aways to find real treasures.

‘NY Dog’ To Pimp Canine Couture
There’s something so f**ked up about this that we can’t help but embrace it: two Irish magazine publishers, one of whom has never owned a dog, are putting out a 96-page glossy magazine called New York Dog, which “is intended to sit alongside Vogue and Cosmopolitan. It even plans to include photo shoots illustrating dog haute couture.” No word yet on whether the mag intends to have a Doggy-Style Fax or articles on how to please your pit bull in bed, but we know the teacup yorkie on 65th and Park is dying for makeup tips.

From Sensory Impact:
“Designer Observer writes about a new corporate magazine by American Express for its Centuiron card customers thats nameless and consists of five articles, four ads and no name:
“The New York Times Business Section today reports a new elite magazine aimed at the exclusive holders of the American Express Centurion Card. The magazine itself consists of five articles, four ads, and no name or indeed, nameplate — which is to say no logo — thus achieving the editor’s goal of being “mysterious and beautiful.”

Sly Stallone: The Magazine Media
The New York-based publication is a health and fitness monthly aimed at a target audience of older men in the 35- to 54-year-old range. “The idea is to provide a good product to a large number of male readers who are really not serviced by other magazines at the moment.” Stallone’s foray into the publishing world puts him in the footsteps of celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O’Donnell and Donald Trump who have all had magazines launched under their names

Cookie magazine, a launch soon to come from Fairchild Publications, looks to be a cross between Lucky and Child, aimed at an upscale audience.
A direct mail piece sent out by Fairchild offering recipients a free trial issue of the new title labels Cookie as “The Magazine for Sophisticated Parents.”
It’s clear from the magazine’s description in the piece that Cookie is aimed at parents who plan to spend a fair amount of money styling and accessorizing their children. The opening paragraph of the letter reads: “You enjoy the best in life for yourself, and you want the same for your children. But finding it isn’t always easy.”
