If the idea of owning a Pokia just isn’t your thing and you’re finding that your latest mobile is just getting so small you have to attach a key ring to it so you don’t lose it, how about having clothing that can communicate?
France Télécom [with the assistance of Bluetooth connectivity] have developed a small, flexible colour display that can be integrated into your clothing. It has the ability to display images and messages from your mobile phone right on to your garments. Using your phone as a control panel it is possible to adjust brightness, draw pictures, create animations, write messages and much more.
“Clothes are becoming a key interface for giving graphic expression and form to your moods. It’s a very personal symbolism, an emotion or state of mind that you can now display publicly and very simply through eye-catching animated graphics and short texts.”
Emeric Mourot, R&D project manager.
It seems likely that this kind of gadgetry is going to appeal to the youth market first and foremost, but apart from the fun aspect, France Telecom suggest that:
Possible applications exist in the professional event marketing and communications sectors (the staff coordinating events could display real-time information for the visitors) or in advertising, public safety, etc.
An initial range of purpose-built garments has been created by the designer Elisabeth de Sennevi.
