The Bike Shop In A Spin

by Guy Brighton

whirl1The Whirl is a new flying drone that will be playing a major role in combat by 2014 using the power of, erm, whirling. Looking like a helicopter’s rotor blade the “Whirl-A-Drone” will be able hover in place for up to four days at a time.

The Whirl has been created by Raytheon’s ‘The Bike Shop’. The radical thinkers of giant defense contractor Raytheon hang out at The Bike Shop, named after Orville and Wilbur’s famous digs and dedicated to inspiring a more creative environment at the company, The Wall Street Journal has reported. The Bike Shop has a corps of 15 handpicked scientists and engineers “striving to bring advanced concepts to life — and to market — as quickly as possible.” Says James Small, who runs the place: “We have more fun than is generally allowed on company time.”

The Whirl, took just a week to produce.
