Lagerfeld - H&M Split.

by Guy Brighton

Lagerfeldprofb_3 It sounds from the reporting that it’s the failure of both parties to have a common vision for their shared business that has put an end to the collaboration.  The production of his collection in sizes larger than he wished, the stock numbers (There was not enough of it) have prompted Lagerfeld to pull out of the H&M deal.   See Vogue.co.uk for the article.

Or was it PSFK’s article highlighting the danger to the high fashion brands he designs.  It seems that we will have to wait a little while longer to see an "A List" designer develop a successful high street line.

PSFK does ponder though the immense value which pulling out of the deal will have created for Lagerfeld.  After all the publicity and awareness of the Lagerfeld brand has been significantly increased and PSFK would speculate that this has done no harm to Lagerfeld at all.

PSFK is sure that the other “A Listers” were watching very closely and we predict that within 5 years we will begin to see High Street diffusion stores from many of the top designers.  Why not?  We’re sure consumers would be more tempted to shop in a Gucci / Lagerfeld / D&G  diffusion line store rather than H&M, Zara, Top Shop etc..  And Lagerfeld has provided a proof of concept with the sales success of his short lived collaboration.
