Nasa has flown an unmanned experimental jet to a speed that was just short of 10 times the speed of sound. The jet is called the X-43A – a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet). Some commentators have speculated that scramjets could one day be used on passenger airliners, dramatically cutting long-haul journey times.
