Share and Share Alike
A suburb of Sydney called Newtown has been running a very effective and clever program recently called Newtown CarShare.
It is a brilliant idea and one that is helping families and the environment.
Anytime you need transport you simply book your car online or by phone for as little as an hour or longer. There’ll be a car somewhere close by (within a 5 minute walk) and all you have to do is jump in, drive and park it back in the same spot.
I costs as little as AUS$4.00 for an hour for a standard car and it’s FREE between the hours of midnight and 6am. Handy if you fancy doing an illegal taxi run (not that PSFK condone that behaviour!). Newtown CarShare also pay for all petrol costs. If you need to refuel you simply use the fuel card placed in the glovebox.
Once you have joined you are issued with a special key that will access any car in their fleet and at the end of each month you’re sent the bill and statement.
Newtown CarShare are so confident that there will always be a car ‘just around the corner’ that in over 2500 bookings only 6 times has a car not been where it should be.
Newtown CarShare is owned by Australia CarShare.
Car sharing has been operating successfully in Europe and North America for over 30 years and has boomed in the last 5 years with the advent of web-based booking and management. There are now over 120,000 people world-wide, sharing approximately 8000 cars.
