China: Here They Come
As we forecasted in our 2005 Trends report, exports of Chinese clothing items to Europe have
surged. Some items have increased by more than 500% since an international quota system came to an
end on 1 January. The EU can now considering bringing in import limits. The French industry minister Patrick Devedjian said
some 7,000 French textile jobs could be at risk unless China limited
its exports. "The situation is very serious … for our businesses
which make these products, which have already been suffering for a
number of years," said Mr Devedjian.
Under World Trade Organisation rules, the EU can now bring in import limits.
Guess what Paddy? The Chinese ain’t gonna go away.
