More On Skype Inc. Skypecasting
Looks like it’s Skype’s week to be in the news.
Skypecasting From NewsTarget
Skype is an online
software service that allows users to contact one another over the
internet for free voice conversations. Podcasting is a personal
broadcasting phenomenon in which users create digital recordings and
post them on a web site for distribution to music players such as iPods or desktop PCs.
Technologically savvy users are merging these technologies to
"Skypecast", using Skype’s service to distribute recordings across the
internet for free. This allows expert users to run their own mini-radio
stations, which can be accessed by any Skype user. Skype does not
actively support these uses, but encourages its users to find new
applications for their service.
Why Skype Is Like Google From NYT
Skype resembles Google,
the gold standard of modern computing, in several ways. Its adoption
rate has been phenomenal. When I wrote about it last September, it had
been downloaded a total of 21 million times. Now the total is 100
million, and at any given moment more than two million Skype
conversations are under way. Like Google, Skype keeps introducing new
features – for instance, "SkypeIn," released two days ago, which allows
users to create a local phone number and have all calls to that number
forwarded to the user’s Skype connection, wherever in the world that
might happen to be. As with Google, once you get used to Skype, it’s
hard to imagine doing without.
Mobile VoIP To Become More Of A Reality From The Herald Tribune
With the global spread of voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP,
cheaper Internet calling options are reaching a growing number of
fixed-line customers. Some of them switch to VOIP service simply by
plugging existing phones into a provider’s Internet adapter box, and
voilà: a new digital-age dial one for the same telephone.
