Cell TV Update : Shawshank & DMB

by Guy Brighton

Shawshankredemption1A deal between Nokia, Granada Ventures and Rok Player will allow the first full-length movie to be available for a mobile phone, Revolution Magazine reports. The movie comes in the form of a digital chip licensed by Rok Player, which can be inserted in multimedia-card-compatible mobile phones.

The film will cost Nokia phone holders £16.99 and is available to buy from mobile phone stores and online via rokplayer.com.The companies are now looking to secure further releases from Granada Ventures’ extensive home entertainment catalogue, which includes ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’, the ‘Carry On’ movies and action from the Premiership teams Arsenal and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Business Week reports on Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (BMB) technology which will go live in South Korea. Seoul have awarded licenses to six broadcasters who
will start DMB programming by mid-summer offering everything from baseball games and soap operas to the
evening news — all for free — on cellular handsets equipped with
special chips, which Korean giants Samsung Electronics Co. and LG
Electronics Inc. have started producing.
Korea faces a couple of potential hurdles though. First, DMB isn’t the only technology out there. Nokia is pushing a standard called DVB-H [for Digital Video
Broadcasting-Handheld] that has wide industry backing, while Qualcomm
(QCOM) has its own version, MediaFLO.
