Flickr-Squatting

(Or giving you a kick to make your brand use Flickr)

Flickr, arguably, is one of the most exciting aspects of the digital age right now. Hundreds of thousands of people upload photos and join groups to share their pics. These groups are normally named around the subject matter from “New York City” to “Blue”. IF and PSFK have even got Flickr groups where people send us their images.

There are a lot of brands out there missing a trick…

Brands should be using Flickr to interact with their audience in a highly visible way. Take a look at PSFK’s Cool Hunt competition and the themes we’ve chosen (cool jeans, cool robot, cool bike). Could you do something similar?

There’s also another possible danger: think URL squatting. Right now anyone can open and secure a group name that is the name of a brand. What happens then? Hopefully it’s some nice fan. Maybe it’s not. Here are some examples we made earlier:

adidias – www.flickr.com/groups/adidas/
Budweiser – www.flickr.com/groups/budweiser/
Dell – www.flickr.com/groups/dellcomputer
the GAP www.flickr.com/groups/gap.

Get involved with Flickr today – and secure your brand’s Group name.
