How do the tightly clad kids of Europe meet each other in the thumping dance floors of Mediterranean discos? They whisper sweet words in each other’s ears – they whisper English. Young, modern young Europeans talk not only to Brits, Antipodeans and Americans with in their lightly accented English  – they speak to each other: in business, in friendship and for summer love.

  1. English is something they increasingly have in common. But as a second language (or third, or fouth…) it doesn’t carry the weight and import of the native language. When I was a teenager in foreign countries, I always found it nearly effortless to say “te quiero” or “je t’aime”, while even the thought of saying “I love you” led to blushing, sweating and lockjaw.
