Standardized Tests & Competitiveness Cause Tutoring Trend

by Guy Brighton

Spending on tutoring has risen by almost 10% every year for the past three years, with an expected $2.5 billion to be spent this year across the US. Offerings vary from SAT prep courses to private instructors on a specific topic. The fact that the SAT is now more difficult and university acceptances more competitive has fueled this trend.  The number of students receiving tutoring has doubled in the past five years.  Large chains such as Sylvan Learning Center and Kaplan, as well as smaller local tutoring centers and private tutors, stand to profit from this growing trend.
