Starbucks appears to be using the change machines found in supermarkets and grocery stores to acquire customers. Shoppers who use these machines usually get a fee when they try to convert their change to bank notes.
Starbucks offers to cover the fee if the shopper elects to have a Starbucks card for the value of the change instead. Starbucks acquires a customer for pennies and effectively has made a sale to the value of the card. ROI That!
