Stop Giving Us What We Want

When I watch a TV show (or film, read a magazine, watch a play etc.) I love to be shocked, surprised, tricked… that’s what makes for a great viewing experience.  The media as a whole is turning into a self-serving, viewer-led medium and although I believe the ‘reality / voting shows’ still have their place, there is also a need to present ‘unexpected’ entertainment.

The news that Channel 4 (UK) are launching a ‘totally’ interactive drama, whereby viewers have the power over the next decision made by the central characters, seems to be blurring those lines.  The premise:

A host of British urban music stars have been cast in the gritty six-part series which hopes to encourage its predominantly young target audience to engage with issues, including guns and drugs.

The shows creators are banking on the interactive nature of its target audience – young people – who are the highest demographic in which to ‘interact’ with TV shows.   There is nothing new here but the fact the show will also be available on MTV Base, E4 and available for download on mobiles and PSP is.

I’m sure the show will get the viewing figures and be well received – by simple virtue of its cast (Ms Dynamite, Shystie, Rodney P and So Solid Crew) – but will there be a backlash or even confusion in terms of ‘controlled’ entertainment?  Don’t we still all like the unexpected?
