Water: A Limited Resource

by Guy Brighton

Water I don’t think anyone will disagree with me when I say that Americans tend not to pay attention to something until it affects their wallet. I don’t believe that hybrid cars are selling like hotcakes because we have a nation full of environmentalists. It just so happens that gas prices are through the roof.

So today I’m thinking about water. Recently returning to the US, I forgot that so many Americans never see a water bill. Those of us that live in apartments or condos, the water bill is usually paid for by the building management. The price of this is packaged into the rent or maintenance fee. And even if people do pay water, I understand that in my area, it will run about $8 or $9 a month.

Water is cheap, and many people don’t even see the bill, so does that mean that many Americans probably don’t care how much water they use? If water cost more, would it lead people to conserve more? Invest in water-saving appliances?

Water is such a necessary and limited resource…what are we doing to save it?
