China is planning "the world’s first sustainable city". British engineers with consulting firm Arup are working in conjunction with strategic partner Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation to develop the city which will be three quarter the size of Manhattan and house a planned 50,000 people.
As China is currently consuming fossil fuels at a mad pace this is a surprising move that should perhaps not be such a surprise. If necessity is the mother of invention we can expect to see China on the forefront of the sustainable world before long.
The groups involved claim government support at the highest levels. Arup is providing a full range of services from infrastructure and architecture to waste management and renewable energy sources. This is the first of four planned cities.

Just saw a piece on http://www.triplepundit.com about China banning electric bicycles in certain cities.

Seems like a country in a strange state of transition.
