DiwaliBollywood as an industry is very ritualistic and superstitious. Directors and Producers consult astrologers, planetary charts and pundits in deciding everything about their movies from the name and spelling of the movie to the exact date and time the first scene should be shot.

This week, Indians all over will be celebrating Diwali and will welcome the releases of atleast six new movies this Friday alone. Undoubtedly, movies that release during Diwali time invite higher expectations and Bollywood isn’t the only one profiting this festival season!

Reports indicate that this year has seen the highest pre-Diwali currency circulation in India. With the brilliant economy, there is a hopeful feel about the future of India and the youth- especially the youth- are spending as much as $2000 to $4000 as festival shopping this year! Way more than what their parents must have spent only a couple of years back.

Diwali is an auspicious and sacred festival, symbolizing the Indian new year, happiness and prosperity. It is during this time that most families make durable purchases: a new fridge, a new TV, a new music-system.. a new car… even a new home! Tradtionally, homes are renovated, re-painted and cleaned to welcome the festival– presenting a huge market for home furnishing retailers.

This season, an average middle-class Indian is buying vacations to Thailand, video IPods and expensive antique furniture.

Happy times for India!
