Cradle to Cradle Certification

Cradle to Cradle Certification

By Guy Brighton on January 23, 2006

In a recent article we told you about an industry and possibly world changing book, "Cradle to Cradle". The agency and authors responsible have also created a certification much like the LEED certification. The program was launched in June of 2005 and is quickly gaining momentum. As well as providing guidelines for making green products the certification is designed to help promote and market green products. Sort of like a Good Housekeeping seal for sustainables.

Just last October six products were awarded certification with many more soon to follow. The authors seek to literally transform industry.

MBDC’s ecologically intelligent certification process is modeled on the promise of the "next industrial revolution" championed by McDonough and Braungart and articulated in their book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. It advocates a paradigm change in corporate thinking and widespread application of the ecologically intelligent design concepts found in nature. In recognizing McDonough as a “Hero for the Planet” in 1999, Time magazine stated “his utopianism is grounded in a unified philosophy that – in demonstrable and practical ways – is changing the design of the world.”

As far as green design goes the future is already here.
