American Furniture stores haven’t been feeling well for a while…maybe you’ve noticed. Lots of them suffer from drab shopping center locations, dark sales areas, and pressuring sales people. Worse yet, strong retailers like Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ikea, and West Elm are quickly choking off sales in traditional furniture stores by selling lifestyle.
Lacking attention, especially from younger customers, furniture manufacturers and retailers have woken up to the power of design folded in with a liberal dose of celebrity recognition. The first real merging of old school and new is Todd Oldham and Lazboy. Last Friday, the two opened a showroom on Wooster Street in Soho NYC. PSFK went in for a look.
