According to a leaked British government report, the traditional corner shop will no longer exist by 2015. Over 2000 independent stores are closing each year and the “big four” UK supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons) are being blamed for the decline.
The government report raises concerns that the majority of Britain’s grocery inventory would be under the control of a few players and that any interruption (e.g. farmers strike, large earthquake like explosion) could make the population vulnerable to poor supplies and could even cause mass ill health.
