The Lodi Woodbridge Winegrape Commission has formally introduced its new sustainable winegrowing certification. The “Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing” are California’s first peer-reviewed sustainable wine growing standards. The Lodi rules rate growers along a number of metrics including adherence to sustainable farming practices, adoption of socially responsible labor practices, and the volume of pesticide and other chemical use.
In addition to showing off a vineyard’s environmental consciousness, the program is being positioned as a potentially valuable branding opportunity for US wine growers. There are a few other certifications for ecologically responsible wine growing including the international ISO 14001 standard and the Winegrowing Institute’s Code of Sustainable Practices.

I’m having a really hard time figuring out how these standards differ (or are similar to) organic standards or biodynamic farming. Any chance you’ll be doing a post comparing them?
