Grammy’s & Yahoo Use New Orleans Charity Plea To Promote Browser

By Guy Brighton on February 8, 2006

At the end of the 2006 Grammy’s an announcement was made about a special Yahoo site for the Grammy’s where you could watch the opening act of the show: Madonna & The Gorillaz. Viewers were asked to click a ‘Donate’ button when they go to watch the clip – a donation that goes towards a New Orleans charity. Musicares.

All sounds nice and supportive so far, yeah? So you click the link and this is the message 99% of web users will get:

ERROR

To use this application with Netscape, you must use version 7.1 or above. Download now.

The problem is that you can only watch the clip using a Netscape browser on Mac or PC. A browser that is used by less than 1% of all web users. So either: the technology and music-award companies were shortsighted in their selection of technology – or that Yahoo/Grammy’s used the New Orleans charity as a gimmick to encourage browser uptake.

We assume the latter. Poor show after such a good one.
