Indian Designers Capture Vogue’s Roving Eye

By Guy Brighton on February 22, 2006

Indian designers Manish Arora, Ashish Soni, Ana-mika strutted their stuff on London’s ramp this week. Manish Arora’s designs evoked a favorable reaction from British Vogue. "Stiff dirndl skirts embroidered with Indian gods, reindeer, Christmas scenes and – the finale – London landmarks including Big Ben, bearskin helmets, red phone boxes and tube signs written in Hindi script, were as amusing as they were multicultural. "

I am Fashion concludes Arora’s outfits as definitely wearable while Rivka, an Indian fashion designer, thinks that Manish Arora played the India-card (colorful Indian motifs, the works) but is thrilled that Indian designers are getting international recognition.

Our analysis? India has been on the fashion editor’s radar for some time now. Indian designers too, have been creating lot of noise with their recent exploits at the London Fashion Week. Although we are yet to see any outstanding creations, we do believe this international scrutiny will bring out some rare, hidden talent from South Asia. And not all of it will be a splash of colors with elephant and Hindu God motifs.
