Nintendo DS To Become Your Blackberry/Treo?

by Guy Brighton

Dstv1One could argue that there are two types of gadget freaks. Gadget freaks who need everything in one device, and gadget freaks who need everything compartmentalized: a phone for speaking, a Blackberry for email , an iPod for sound and so on and so on.

Soon of course, there won’t be a Blackberry (probably/possibly) so users will have to turn to an alternative device. A Treo perhaps? Maybe not for the compartmentalized lot: New applications for the WiFi enabled Nintendo DS might make the DS a real alternative to the Blackberry. The DS now has a browser and the makers, Opera, say:

With an on-screen keypad and stylus, users can easily navigate the Web from their Nintendo DS with PDA-like functionality. Based on the same core as the Opera desktop browser, Opera delivers superior speed and rendering of Web pages on the Nintendo DS.

It may not have a phone (yet) but with Opera you can access your mail and other web-apps and the DS Lite even plays video.

The DS comes with another special feature, of course. Playing Mario Karts against some kid in Helsinki while you wait for your mates in the Ear Bar on New York’s Spring Street.
