A friend visiting NYC from Warsaw last night brought with him a bottle of Poland’s favorite vodka brand Zubrowka (quirky memories of my last time in the Pole capital flooded back at first sip). The "Bison Brand Vodka" has a blade of home grown Bison grass in it – and this gives the vodka such a distinct taste. Best drank in ‘Apple Pie’ form – vodka and apple juice. Well that’s what you think until the morning after…..

Zubrowka is lovely stuff. My roommate used to live in Poland, and was of course obsessed with its yumminess. We live in NYC and recently found some at a liquor store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It’s a very Polish area so I’m sure they have it everywhere around there. We’ve looked a lot of places, and Greenpoint is the only place we’ve been able to find it in the city. Yay apple pie drink!

Funny: You reminded me of my last trip to Germany, where friends of mine drink this brand (one of them has family in Poland), and who got me ripped off it my first night there in 2004, after being up for 34 hours and still completely jetlagged. What a fond memory!

Do not buy the officially imported to USA stuff that pretends to be Zubrowka! It’s nowhere near the real thing’s taste and flavor. As a matter of fact, it might turn you off and prevent from ever trying the real stuff. I bought the Bak’s brand Zubrowka once and regreted it. It’s NASTY. You have to bring a bottle from Europe or have someone from Poland buy you a bottle on the plane from Poland (only about $5.00 duty free- what a deal). It makes one of the best mixed drinks ever with apple juice and a slice of lemon. They call it Tatanka in Poland – I believe it’s from the movie “Dances with Wolves”. The first Lakota word Kevin Cosner’s character learns is Tatanka – or Bison Bull.
Anyway, Zubrowka is a great flavored vodka and can be made at home. Sweet Grass is available mail order in the USA. It is known to the native Americans and used as incense in their rites and for waeving of sweet smelling baskets. There are a few receipes posted on the web.

My wife an I just returned from visiting Europe and while in Krakow, we bought a bottle of Zubrowka and it is the best vodka I’ve ever tasted. Does anyone know of a webite that it can be ordered from. I do not want to buy Zubrowka from USA because I’ve heard a lot of horrible things about it.
