Kasteel Cru is a beer that uses ‘Champagne Yeast’ for a strong, sparkling lager. Brewed in Alsace, we picked this bottle up at the PSFK get together at the REfuel bar at the Soho Hotel on Monday – and it’s pretty damn fine.
We’ve never found Champagne Beer – and we’ve visited a lot of places they sell beer – but someone told us that Champagne Beer is not a new idea – infact, it’s a Barley Wine. "Years ago, people used to love Barley Wine. We called it Stogey. They were mad for it. They’d drink it and go crazy," one older fine gent told us.

Another interesting “champale” is Midas Touch Golden Elixir by Dogfish Head.
“This recipe is the actual oldest-known fermented beverage in the world! Our recipe showcases the known ingredients of barley, white Muscat grapes, honey & saffron found in the drinking vessels in King Midas’ tomb! Somehwere between a beer, wine and mead, this smooth, dry ale will please with Chardonnay or I.P.A. drinker alike.”

I tasted Kasteel Cru recently and whilst I am not a big fan of lighter beers such as this (more into real ale) I did find it pleasant enough and would try it again if it was available.
The website http://www.kasteelcru.com is quite interesting, with info on the brewing and its history.
Cheers!
