India’s Retail Sector Opening Up May Create a Job Boom

Walmart opened a market research office in Bangalore, India last month heightening the frenzy surrounding the expected opening up of India’s retail sector. Although, India has one of the largest number of retailers in the world (12 million retail outlets), organized retailing forms only 2%. On the one hand there is trepidation of job loss due to the entry of Walmart and other biggies. On the other hand, however, there is an expectation that a lot of new jobs will be created as the retail industry organizes itself.
