Slivercasts

by Henry Lambert

Radiowaves
There’s been quite a lot of online buzz surrounding’ slivercasts’. The longtail points to the power of niche and slivercasts are the latest attempt to embed themselves in these niches.

A slivercast is effectively a television programme broadcast over the web. Nothing new really. However, these programmes don’t attempt to gain as wide an audience as possible as ITV1 or even HBO might attempt. Instead they focus on the tinest of niches and thanks to the sheer enourmity of the web they attract good size audiences who share these sometimes bizarre passions.

The mechanisms are all in place to create web TV. Distribution is sorted. Just think of YouTube or Google Video and the manner in which a mildly entertaining clip can zip around hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of hours. Marketing can be created via your blog.

If you can create video that appeals to just a tiny percentage of people, thanks to the web, you can be a star.
