diesel-u-music goes global

By Guy Brighton on April 30, 2006

At first glance you’d be forgiven for probing at the integrity of new music contest Diesel-U-Music. After all, a major fashion corporation creates it. But if you do doubt the cause, have a rethink. For the past five years Diesel-U-Music has launched the careers of new music elites such as Mylo, We Are Scientists and Tom Vek. Actually, there’s nothing contrived about these talents or the event itself. It even gives accolades to those who’ve similarly dedicated their time to push the futures of music forward; in 2004 both Mick Jones the late John Peel received awards.

Launching this year, Diesel-U-Music or DUM it’s affectionately known, is about to take entries from ‘unsigned and unseen’ music makers around the globe. Under the loosely bound genres of Rock, Urban/Hip-Hop and Electronic, artists assume a category, go online and upload their music, biogs, and photos, then wait in hope for the judges to place them as one of the nine finalists for their territory.

Furthermore, the fashion label itself does very little to boast its loyalty to the music industry, it just continues to make the fresh, colourful and unpretentious street wear it has become known for.

Online applications start 1st May and end 25th June
