All right, I know it’s risky to post about an 80’s resurrection as just about everything from that decade has already been dredged up while post-millennium tension still lingers. Back in the late 80’s I was nearing the start of my formal design training at art school. ID Magazine was about the only source for information regarding product design. I remember a certain lamp caught my eye and still remains a favorite of mine. It was the Jazz Lamp designed by Porsche in 1989.
A few years later I was fortunate enough to be able to visit one of the few Porsche Design Stores operating in the US at the Forum Shops in Las Vegas. The Jazz Lamp was there, as well as an endless array branded Porsche high-end merchandise. None of which had anything to do with their cars. Looking back, the original Porsche Design Stores were ground breaking as not even auto dealerships at that time offered any kind of lifestyle merchandise to support the brand. But eventually the stores disappeared.
Porsche, the world’s only independently owned automaker, have recently revived the Design Stores and has initiated a licensing program to offer branded Porsche products in it’s stores. Recently, the first east coast location opened in NYC in ironically, the former General Motors Building.
