An article in the NY Times looks at the “return” of Zines – small, hand crafted magazines, made out of love rather than commerce. Zines like The Believer, Lemon, Clamor, Swindle, Anthem, Beautiful/Decay, Bidoun, Re:Up, Archetype and The Drama are mentioned and there’s nods to The Face and Dazed & Confused for inspiration.
Created in apartments or after work at the office by writers, graphic designers, artists and grown-up skateboarders, the magazines tend to be expensively produced quasi art objects published two, three or four times a year with the intent that they will be collected and saved. They sell for anywhere from $3.95 to $14.95.
What comes from reading the article that these art-project magazines don’t seem to be created by frustrated students in their dorms – but thirty something media types looking for a new release.

All independent publishing is on the rise, from Annuals to Zines, so much so that we’ve formed Indy&Ink, The International Society of Independent Publishers. It formed in London this week, but has members already across Europe and Australia. American titles would be welcome.
