The guys at Treehugger are in a bit of a tiz: on one hand, they know that the world view of hipster kids is that Walmart is a big bad Red State monster but on the other, they find that they can’t stop writing about their eco-initiatives including green roofs, sustainable fish, buying forests and corn-based plastics. “What’s going on?” they ask as they now write up the Walmart of the future speech of CEO Lee Scott.

Wal-Mart still supports the violation of human rights every single day in China, and to the tune of $$billions$$ every year. If they want to alter our perceptions of them, they should alter how they do business, starting by not supporting sweatshops— and THEN work their way toward green roofs. Until then, it’s simply transparent PR “greenwashing”. (Of course, if all this actually occured, it wouldn’t really be Wal-Mart anymore. Because not everything would be dirt cheap.) As of now, they’re hypocrisy just got more visible. That’s it.
