Are CoCoCo’s OK?

by Piers Fawkes

With France and Germany under pressure to relax legislation that protects jobs for life, an article in Newsweek looks at the pros and cons of Europe’s move towards a ‘temp-contract’ workforce. Spain seems to have benefited from moving their workforce to a more short-term contract – unemployment has dropped from 25% to below the European average of 9%. – and the rest of Europe are following – also ‘temp’ jobs are moving from low end jobs to management.

Meanwhile there seems to be a backlash to the CoCoCos (Consecutive Continuous Contracts) even within the business community. Because contracts can fail to offer security to the worker and the employer may not want to invest in the skills of a workforce that may move on – there can be a serious negative economic effect: that families withhold their spending in the economy and the workforce fails to get trained.
