End Of Inbetween: Laptops On The Beach

by Piers Fawkes

Laptop-Party

The picture above shows someone at a AAAA conference party at Loews hotel in Miami Beach. As hundreds partied around her, this girl worked diligently on - a presentation. Whatever happened to the concept of going out all night, then returning to your hotel room at 1am to rewrite the bugger??

Anyway, it reflects a trend that we are following called ‘The End Of Inbetween’ (a name inspired actually by a speech by Graham Hill at the Future Marketing Summit sponsored by IF! in Feb). WiFi on planes, crackberries and laptops on the beach seem to be destroying any chance of ‘downtime’ we should get. This trend doesn’t seem to be receding - a survey has found that the number of Americans who work during their vacations has nearly doubled in the last decade, with the laptop computer replacing the cellular phone as the most useful tool for working on holiday, Reuters reports:

Some 43 percent of office workers said they work on vacation, compared with 23 percent in a survey taken in 1995… Overall, roughly one in four employees said they spent three or more hours working during vacation. Most said they were committed to the job or had a pressing assignment, while 10 percent cited an inability to relax until things were taken care of.
