You underestimate the amount of checking and thinking and journalism that goes into producing a daily paper. Significantly.

Digg might not have stories about new silicone - but then, perhaps lipstick.com (Digg for celeb stories) does. Digg has its equivalent, because it's for geeks. So you get tales about how to do ... stuff that's as in-geeky as the downmarket stories in The Sun.

And - name me some stories that OhMyNews has broken. Point me to some news organisations that are setting themselves up in the same way.

Putting a newspaper together really is not simple aggregation. If it were, there would be a lot more newspapers.

And emphatically - the Guardian does not think blogs are crap. If it did, why would it have so many itself? Vic is making the key point: that the wisdom of crowds quickly degenerates into the madness or obsession of crowds. It's Life Of Brian all over again: don't all run after your newest Brian (Digg? Ohmynews? del.icio.us?) clutching the holy sandal and the gourd.

I read a lot of blogs, and it really is panning for gold. There's an awful lot which has to go down the river in the meantime.

Sure, people turn to blogs before the news, because they find opinions they like on blogs. But they turn to the news for their news. And blogs turn to the MSM too for their news, in the great majority of cases.

One of the points made in last week's post "The Guardian Still Thinks Blogs Are Crap" was that people are beginning to turn to blogs before they turn to the mainstream media. A story on how Indians around the world turned to the blogs after last week's...
