PSFK Window Shopping: Skulls

PSFK Window Shopping: Skulls

By Jeff Squires on August 2, 2006

While roaming the streets of New York, the PSFK team picked up on the reoccurring themes of selling stuff in SOHO by using skulls.

They’re everywhere!  We can’t stop seeing them.  They made their appearance in the world of fashion just a year or two ago, but seem to have already overstayed their welcome.  While skulls on clothes may have already jumped the shark, we found plenty of skull-influenced advertising in the streets of SOHO.

Vans use of skulls is by far the most prominent.  Their black and white, skull encrusted posters are plastered on nearly every construction site in lower Manhattan, however, their monstrous billboards look more like advertisements for Halloween superstores.

Dolce & Gabbana even hopped on the skull train with an x-ray themed window display.  They avoided the usual dark and morbid motif typically associated with the ominous symbol, opting for a more cutesy design, proving even the dead love D&G.  It is interesting to note that D&G’s use of skulls is limited to their SOHO store, whereas their uptown location is focused on hyping up their ‘Italian-ness’ with a World Cup Inspired display.

We even found skull accessories being displayed on skull props.  That’s right, skulls on skulls!  This whole skull thing has even made that skeleton holding a cell phone you see all over the place seem like it belongs there.
