Pushing Drugs On A Coffee Cup

by Piers Fawkes

Headache PromotionAdam Rant drops us an email about a drug sampling scheme found on the side of a coffee cup:

I nip downstairs to get a cup of cheap coffee from the deli below the office on Canal Street. The coffee sleeve has been sponsored by Excedrin a headache drug. A free sample is attached. Pushing FREE drugs to ANYONE who buys a coffee is taking ambient media to a new low, alright advertising on grave stones was pretty bad but…

The drug can have the following side-effects (according to the tiny package print): behavioral changes, vomiting, nausea, hives, facial swelling, asthma/wheezing, shock, Liver damage and stomach bleeding. It also contains caffeine (on a cup of coffee?!) which may cause: nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness and rapid heart beat.

I just wanted my cup of Joe, how dare they push this onto me! I hope DDB New York choke on their $35 million Bristol-Myers Squibb account and that their children have crack sold to them in the school yard.

Of course, we don’t endorse Adam’s comments especially if DDB NY wants to start advertising this crap on our site. Thank you.
