Where did modern man come from? What institutions or social movements contributed to the formation of modern man? Undoubtedly, it’s a highly complicated, organic process where some people are more influenced by certain scenes than others. But one movement that has consistently shaped young men around the country is punk rock – often prematurely judged based solely on it’s visual aesthetics, Corey Canada of The Opine has some interesting comments on how punk rock formed the modern man that he is today.
Punk rock evolved from working, middle class men and for the most part has been dominated by them as an outlet for expression and resistance to perceived and/or real oppression.
Henry Rollins former front man of Black Flag sang "Rise Above" and it’s a good line to remember as a modern man. That thought "Rise Above" can spider out to many paths. For me "Rising Above" means standing up for what I believe in, respecting myself and other people, deviating from the conventional, voicing dissent, keeping the machine at bay and enjoying life while living in a American society of convenience, consumption and propaganda. I may not be that dirty punk skate grommet anymore but the vibe and spirit of punk rock and skating still lives on in my adult life, in my interest, choices, recreational activities and my cynical view of the "norm".
