Great Magazines: Monument

by Piers Fawkes

Monument Mag

Monument is a wonderful magazine we picked up in Denpasar airport recently which seems to reflect the ‘Monumentism’ trend we’ve been following. Monument is a large format magazine that looks at the intersection of design and architecture and celebrates the development of powerful spaces that influences our lives. The letter from the Editor Fleur Watson in issue 74 says:

“Every so often - although far too rarely - great design and commercial sensibilities collide to create something truly inspiring… The reality is that for something truly special to happen, the ingredients for success need to be there from conception: creativity, courage and commitment - coupled with sound commerce.”

Published out of Australia, the magazine also shines a spotlight on the sublime works of Antipodean creative minds all too often missed by a design press preoccupied with transatlantic prowess. Their website describes Issue 74 as:

We venture back into classic MONUMENT territory: travelling the far reaches of the globe for the best contemporary design. Art provides a common thread through much of this issue’s peregrinations: from the sculptural form of Wood Marsh’s Yve apartments in Melbourne, to Durbach Block’s Land Art-influenced observation deck, the Brick Pit, in Sydney to the massive minimalism of Gianni Botsford’s London home for two art historians. We also feature the architecture-inspired art of Howard Arkley on the eve of his own major travelling retrospective.
