GapfallYes, this is for real.

The “Keep it Simple” campaign features original film footage of style icon Audrey Hepburn dancing in the movie “Funny Face,” juxtaposed to the AC/DC song “Back in Black.” The campaign relaunches Gap’s skinny black pants and includes the tagline, “It’s Back–The Skinny Black Pant.” This marks the first time in more than 12 years that a film clip of Hepburn has been authorized to endorse a commercial product in North America. “We wanted to do something really special to relaunch our skinny black pants and thought who better to showcase them than actress Audrey Hepburn–an iconic woman famous for dressing with sophistication and classic style,” said Trey Laird, creative director of the company. The 30- and 60-second spots will air through Oct. 5. The campaign follows disappointing sales results for Gap Inc. in August.

  1. weird..

  2. That’s about the coolest commercial I’ve ever seen. GAP is reclaiming some lost ground…

  3. and she is… the gymnast from Seinfeld, the great Elina Lowensohn

  4. one of the best commercials i have ever seen…its completely genious

  5. Seems like they’re trying to hard. Nothing really original here. On the other hand, the Apple iPod ads not only show originality but great identity and brand evolution. The Gap has done much better in the past.

  6. How horrible! Audrey Hepburn is so above GAP. What an awful use of her legacy!

  7. I agree with Jeff, this commercial only uses the fame of Audrey Hepurn to help lure back customer but in the end it doesn’t matter-GAP needs to improve the quality of their clothes, stores, and sales staff. Commercials means nothing if the product doesn’t back it up.

  8. It is absolutely a disgrace. She cannot choose to appear or not. I am appalled.

  9. The Gap – Audrey Hepburn ad is amazing, enthralling, mesmerizing – the ultimate in cool, hip, seamless fun – energetic and energizing. The work of genius!!! One of the best ads I’ve ever seen!

  10. This commercial is so inventive in my opinion! I know that the Apple commecials are amazing but this one is good too. Also, if you go to the stores, the windows with her are really great.

  11. I absolutely love the Gap commercial with Hepburn for its artistic ingenuity. I cannot understand those who are outraged ! She was not royalty, she was after all, an entertainer and this was most entertaining!

  12. i love this commercial… when i hear the music i run to watch the TV

  13. An abomination. I can only hope that someone will be fired over this. I didn’t shop at The Crap before, and this sort of thing will guarantee that I never will. Awful.

  14. Everyone wants a piece of Marilyn too. I don’t hear people lamenting her face appropriated on dishes, perfume bottles, and sweaters, et al. That’s how obsessive celebrity is celebrated. Who wouldn’t want to be an icon? The choreography, camera work and soundtrack are great together! Who cares if it does or doesn’t sell clothes? I don’t have an ipod and I don’t shop at the Gap, no matter. I love it !

  15. Worst commercial ever made. It annoys the hell out of me and I want to smash the TV everytime it is on.

  16. The problem is that the GAP has a very narrow customer base. Its like a bad version of Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch. Nothing like a dead actress to spur sales.

  17. I just liked seeing her again. She was drop dead cute!

  18. I truly enjoy the commercial and seeing a fresh view of Audrey Hepburn. No one should be tried of viewing this type of work, bringing generations together. I loved it. Does anyone know what movie this clip is from?

  19. This commercial is brilliant and should win a Cleo! Who cares about the quality of Gap’s clothing? If you look at this ad from an artistic and creative p.o.v. – it’s amazing!

  20. This is the worst commercial I have ever seen. I am so sick of stupid ad agencies and corporations using old Hollywood icons to sell their products. LAME!

  21. As a huge Audrey fan I think she would have gotten a kick out of this ad, and I suppose if we asked her children they would agree. And so what if the Gap uses images of those that have gone on ahead; we all know that Audrey wore black in a classic manner that transcends the world in an infinite way (so why shouldn’t she?), so let the ad celebrate that moment in fashion when Audrey helped inspire a classic as timeless. I have personally worn the little black Gap pant since the last incarnation of them in the 90s; they have, and always will be, the classic woman’s best friend. Furthermore, as a former fashion buyer/junkie, the genius of putting together classic rock, classic pants, and classic Audrey creates an innovative advertisement in a time when TV ads rarely make clear what they are selling. The Gap should claim success for the ad, and hopefully find success at the cash register—basics good, trendy absurd! I’m hoping the Gap will return to the basics, adding an occassional twist of trend that spices up the wardrobe now and then. Maybe they should hire me to assist them with marketing ideas—I am pretty astute when it comes to predicting and manipulating what women want to see in an ad.

  22. If you dont like this comercial your a snoot and aint nuthin more american then ac/dc rok n roll, and if Audrey was a snoot or not shes all american to!(via Brussels)
