This morning a bunch of people – many of whom didn’t know each other – met in a cafe called sNice to chat over coffee. The coffee morning is called Likemind and is run my myself and Noah Brier.
sNice is a large place and offers enough room for what can be a small crowd who tends to take over the space. sNice also offers tables and chairs for us to meet around. What gets said at those tables and what we show each other is up to us. sNice has no influence on our discussions – unless we start getting unruly and start upsetting the other customers.
sNice is like Digg or YouTube. It’s a platform to come together, talk and present in the same way Digg lets people swap news and YouTube lets people share their videos.
Right now, Digg and YouTube are trying to work out how to monetize their offerings. Some worry that users will leave in droves, if YouTube top and tail the user videos with ads. And what would be the affect on the anti-corporate audience if Digg really did combine the personal and voting data to target specific brand messages?
sNice already knows what do do. The owners of sNice don’t put ads on our tables or get us to provide personal data as we enter the cafe. No, sNice sells us good coffee, nice bagels, great sandwiches and super cakes. That’s it. And the water’s free!
sNice is a great place because of the freedom to meet and share AND because of the great things we can consume there together.
sNice is a platform just like Digg and YouTube. Why can’t Digg and YouTube make money by selling us products and services that enrich our experience while we are there?
