Last night fashion.psfk went along to the Forever Marilyn charity auction at the Scream art gallery in Bruton St. Inspired by the
eightieth anniversary of the birth of Marilyn Monroe, a host of artists and designers had created one-off pieces paying homage to the Hollywood star which were auctioned off in aid of Save the Children.
The auction line-up was impressive- a Vivienne Westwood outfit inspired by photos of Marilyn from ‘Some Like it Hot’, a portrait of Marilyn from the estate of acclaimed photographer Milton Greene, a bold, Pop art-influenced unique Philip Treacy hat, a Marilyn-inspired pair of jeans from London Denim decorated with Swarovski crystals, a Tracey Emin sketch, and an Issa dress with a repeat print of the iconic Marilyn billowing dress image were just some of the many pieces under the hammer.
Hosted by Samantha Morton, Daisy De Villeneuve, Fran Cutler, Meg Matthews and Serena Rees, the gallery was bursting with arty fashiony types, as well as a Marilyn look-alike, and several suits with large wallets who helped to boost the bidding fun.
Forty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe still remains one of the
most prominent Hollywood symbols of beauty and desirability. However, the reason Save The Children chose to use her in this charity campaign was to highlight the side of her life that many people do not realise- ‘while
Marilyn personified Hollywood glamour she was bought up in both foster
homes and orphanages so knew what it was like to be a displaced child.’ Last night’s event cleverly tied in both of these aspects and helped to raise money for the charity’s recently launched ‘Rewrite the Future Campaign’, which aims to
get the 43 million children in conflict-affected countries who are not
receiving an education into school.
