Hub Culture

Hub
PSFK were invited last night to the first dinner event organised by Hub Culture,
which took place at Carpaccio in London. After running around Frieze
earlier, an evening with a select group of artists and collectors gave
a great opportunity to reflect and debate on what we had all just seen.

The event, hosted by Stan Stalnaker and art advisor and dealer Lauren
Prakke, was the first in their concept to introduce face-to-face
socialising among people across creative and business disciplines who
would not normally interact, and promote discussion and the sharing of
ideas.

Stan’s book ‘Hub Culture’, which spawned the company vision, is based
around the idea of the ’sliver’ of people in big cities who have more
in common with their global counterparts than with their local culture,
thus creating their own culture. With lifestyles becoming increasingly
multi-national, Stan presents Hub Culture as ‘post-national’, with the
ideal member being a mixture of nationalities and living in yet
another- someone who does not associate themselves by their nationality.

The result last night was a fascinating dinner conversation spanning
art, psychology and the creative  economy. My fellow diners included
some very eloquent and interesting artists including Shezad Dawood,
Beth Derbyshire, VJ Anyone and Maria Marshall (all of whom I will be
writing more about very soon), who debated amongst other things- the
distinction between art and art marketing, the use of PR in art to
raise the value of ideas, whether clubbing is art, and whether movies
will go the same way as clubbing- would you YouTube your art?

The dinner events are aimed not only at the art world, but are planned
around global events in order to encourage socialising among a range of
fields. The next planned event will be held in LA in December and will
be based around the entertainment industry, followed by a dinner at
Davos in January where the company will be officially launched. I’ll be
waiting for my next invite!
