This week seems to be turning into etiquette week- Time magazine reports on the newly released Debrett’s Etiquette for Girls. The book is a modern update to the publisher’s well-known editions on the rules of proper behaviour, which have been chronicled since 1769. However, unlike earlier tomes which have preached decorum and class, this new version includes help on topics such as how to best gossip, what to do when encountering celebrities, and how to cheat on your husband.
According to the editor Jo Aitchison, ""We decided it was time for a bit of a change, Etiquette will be a survival guide for modern life while
becoming a trusted friend as well". Changing the recognised understanding of etiquette slightly, Debrett’s have actually very cleverly identified those areas in modern life that are un-guided and given them rules and conventions for what they feel to be correct behavior in society- and with 237 years in the business they should know!
